Some people remember their childhood through photographs. I remember mine through churches.

Every sanctuary in this series holds a chapter of my life. Within these walls I learned to bow my head, to sing hymns, to wrestle with doubt, to celebrate, to grieve, and to search for God. Some of these places embraced me. Others wounded me. One became the place where I was outed—a moment that forever changed my relationship with faith and with the church itself.

Yet this series is not about resentment. It is about remembrance.

These drawings preserve more than architecture. They preserve the emotional landscape of a spiritual journey. Every steeple, stained-glass window, weathered brick, and wooden pew represents a place where prayer became part of who I am. The buildings remain long after the voices have faded, standing quietly as witnesses to joy, fear, confusion, healing, and hope.

Rendered in graphite, these churches are intentionally stripped of color so that their stories, not their ornamentation, take center stage. Like memory itself, they exist somewhere between history and feeling.

Where I Learned to Pray is my attempt to reclaim sacred spaces that shaped me. It is a reminder that God was present in every chapter, even when people failed to reflect that love. These churches taught me that faith is not confined to a building, but the buildings still deserve to be remembered, for within their walls generations discovered hope, carried burdens, celebrated milestones, and whispered prayers that only heaven heard.

This series is dedicated to every place that helped shape my faith, even when the journey was complicated. Because every stone has a story, and every prayer leaves an echo.
