Old Franklin County Courthouse

Standing proudly in downtown Russellville, The Old Franklin County Courthouse completed in 1893 became a symbol off Russellville’s return as the county seat after the Belgreen courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1890. Designed with a soaring clock tower and bell, the three-story brick building reflected the confidence and growth of Franklin County at the turn of the twentieth century. It quickly became one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and the center of county government for generations.

On January 13, 1953, tragedy struck when fire engulfed the courthouse. Although the building itself could not be saved, county employees and volunteers worked tirelessly to rescue the official records before the flames consumed the structure. The courthouse was later demolished, and a new limestone courthouse was constructed on the same site. Today, the original courthouse bell remains on display as a lasting tribute to the building that once stood there.

Though no longer standing, the old Franklin County courthouse remains one of Russellville’s most cherished landmarks – a reminder that while buildings may be lost, the history and memories they hold continue to endure.
