St. Michaels Catholic Church

Founded in 1872, St. Michael’s Catholic Church stands at the heart of a German Catholic community of St. Florian, Alabama. Following the Civil War, Father J.H. Heuser established a colony if German immigrants on the former Wilson Plantation, where the settlers’ first priorities were to build a church and school. Their faith and denomination laid the foundation for one of North Alabama’s oldest Catholic parishes.

The original church was a modest wooden structure completed in 1872. As the congregation grew, it was expanded several times before the present Gothic Revival church was constructed and dedicated in 1916. The parish and town were named in honor of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, while the church itself was dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, protector of the church.

More than 150 years later, St. Michael’s remains an active place of worship and a lasting symbol of faith, perseverance, and heritage of the German families who helped shape the Shoals. Its soaring steeple continues to rise above the surrounding farmland as a reminder that some of the strongest communities are built on faith, family, and tradition.
