Old Belgreen High School

The community of Belgreen traces its roots to the late 1870’s, when Franklin County established a new town after moving the county seat from Frankfort. Surveyed in 1878, Belgreen quickly became the center of the county government, with a courthouse, jail, post office and growing business district serving the surrounding farming communities.

Although the wooden courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1890, leading the county seat to return to Russellville, Belgreen continued to thrive as a close-knit agricultural community. The town’s greatest legacy became Belgreen School, founded in the late nineteenth century and expanded under the leadership of educator John R. Guin. For generations, the school has served as the heart of the community, educating local families and preserving Belgreen’s unique identity.

Today, Belgreen is known for its enduring sense of community, rich educational tradition, and deep agricultural roots. Though small in size, it remains a place where history is cherished, neighbors know one another, and generations continue to call it home.
