First Presbyterian Church - Florence

Founded in 1818, First Presbyterian Church of Florence is the oldest Christian congregation in the city and was established even before Alabama became a state is 1819. The congregation purchased its property from the Cypress Land Company the same year Florence was founded, an in 1824 completed its first permanent sanctuary on the very site where the church sits today. For more than two centuries, this sacred place has remained a constant presence in the heart of downtown Florence.

Throughout its history, the church has expanded and adapted to the needs of a growing community while preserving its historic foundation. Often called the “Mother Church of Florence,” First Presbyterian has played an important role in the city’s spiritual life, helping establish other congregations and remaining committed to worship, service, and outreach through every chapter of Florence’s history.
